Sustaining a Beautiful Beach

North Ave Beach

The City of Chicago has a long-term vision for re-designing the north branch of Lake Shore Drive.  A prime junction along this roadway is North Avenue Beach, the epicenter of the annual Air and Water Show, and visited by hundreds of thousands of sun-worshipers, cyclists, dog walkers, tourists, children, and seniors every year.  This wonderful park is also the site of many challenges, from bike and pedestrian collisions to blowing sand and a lack of space at its high-demand dining and retail outlets.  In 2014 the Chicago Park District took the visioning process of North Lake Shore Drive as an opportunity to explore new opportunities for North Avenue Beach.  AECOM led the team, Quercus was a sub-contractor responsible for editing and unifying the final report, coordinating with landscape architects, economists, and graphic designers.
