Every 10 years or so, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning conducts a massive Household Transportation Survey to analyze the mobility needs of the seven-county northeastern Illinois region. The survey is promoted widely, but some populations are more challenging to reach than others. It is crucial for a transportation survey of this scale to include experiences of all people and communities, so Quercus Consulting was retained to pilot an intensive face-to-face outreach campaign at different points of the survey’s implementation.
Quercus utilized its workforce development partner, Greencorps Chicago, to assist in conducting the outreach. The teams set up information tables and distributed palm cards to commuters at multiple Chicago Transit Authority train stations and major bus hubs, Metra commuter rail stations, at City Colleges of Chicago and all three locations of the College of Lake County. The outreach effort connected with over 5,000 people, and the final tally of survey respondents achieved the desired representation of people and communities in the region.
