The campus of the College of Lake County is a ‘living lab’ for its students. Agriculture program students manage the campus farm, HVAC students gain hands-on experience with the ground-source heat exchange system, electrical engineering students can visit the on-site solar panel systems, and more.
In 2019 the College opened the Living Lab Trail, a 1.5 mile walking trail around the campus with over a dozen double-sided signs presenting information about the campus’ sustainability achievements, and providing readers a call to action on each subject. The trail continues inside the campus buildings with nearly 50 additional highlight signs pointing out features such as restroom fixtures that use collected rainwater to the food scrap collection bins in the cafe which become compost used by the agriculture students on the campus farm!
Quercus Consulting collaborated with the College’s staff and faculty to develop the signage content, and partnered with Strassel Creative on the design and 2 Point Perspective for the architectural scope.
